Registering for Lodging

F Please Note: We have filled our allotted space at the Mayflower dormitory.  While the Iowa House (the on-campus hotel at the Iowa Memorial Union, IMU) no longer is holding a block of rooms for us, they are taking reservations at the GPOTS rate of $75 per night plus tax as long as space is available.  To see if space is available at the Iowa House, please contact them directly at (319) 335-3513 or through the web: http://imu.uiowa.edu/iowa_house/reservations/group_reservation.php. Please use the group code: GPOTS.

Additional "overflow" lodging may be found at the Heartland Inn (at the rate of $68 per night plus tax). The Heartland Inn is in Coralville, IA, about 2 miles from the lecture hall.   Please contact the Heartland Inn directly at (319) 351-8132 and use the group code: UIMA.

Alternate lodging may be found through this URL, www.iowacity.com/hotels.htm, and elsewhere on the web.

Transportation

For transportation information, including directions to Iowa City, visit our Transportation page.

To guests in the Mayflower housing: There is a quick, easy and free bus (called Cambus) that you will be able to take to and from the lectures. The building where the lectures take place is called Van Allen Hall (VAN.) But it is actually only a 5 minute walk, and a nice one as well.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q1: Where do I go if I arrive during the day on Tuesday?

A: Check in where you made accommodation reservation. Some of you are in the IMU building.
Get a local map, and identify key buildings on campus IMU (The Union down by the river. Part of it is a hotel); and VAN (Van Allen Hall - the physics building - two blocks over east on Iowa Avenue).
Campus buildings are mixed in with buildings in town. The two IMU and VAN buildings are in opposite directions from Math building (MLH) and the Old Capitol building.

Today in the evening Tuesday 5/23, the reception and registration is in the IMU State Room, beginning tonight at 7 pm (that is 19:00.)  Mrs. Margaret Driscol from Math will be heading up registration.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 5/24 AM there will also be registration, but instead at VAN (
the physics building.) It will be in the Lobby in front of the big lecture room VAN LR 1; i.e., in from the main entrance to VAN out to Iowa Avenue.
The lecture-rooms in VAN are where the talks take place, starting 5/24 at 8:30 am. Get there early for refreshments!
If you arrive late, we will deal with that too.

Q2. How do I submit my abstract online?

A: This site includes separate links for the purpose: one for submitting your own title/abstract, and one for
viewing what has been submitted so far.

Q3. Who may submit an abstract?

A: If you are an invited speaker, please go ahead and submit as soon as you can. If you would like to
contribute a talk to one of the parallel sessions, you may also submit. You can check with one of the organizers about the most current information about parallel sessions of talks.

Q4. When is the deadline for submission of abstracts?

A: April 1, 2006.

Q5. What are registration fees and registration deadline?

A: The registration fee is $30 for students, $50 for post-docs and temporarily employed, and $100 for permanent faculty. There is no assigned deadline for registration yet.

Q6. What airport?

A:  Cedar Rapids (code CID). It has lots of connections!  See the GPOTS transportation page.

The best airport by far is the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Airport, also known as Eastern Iowa Airport (code CID). The Airport Shuttle Service, located at the airport (1-800-725-8460), charges $30 one way to locations in Iowa City.  However, if a group goes to *the same location*, each additional passenger to that location is $10.  Cabs are also available at somewhat higher rates for single passengers, but may offer comparable or better rates for multiple passengers.

Iowa House (the on-campus hotel at the Iowa Memorial Union, IMU) is in walking distance of everything!

Q7.  How can I pay the registration fee?

A.  You must pay with cash or check.  The Department has no means to process credit cards or debit cards.

Q8. How long are the contributed talks?

A.  Each contributed talk is scheduled for 20 minutes, with a 5 minute break between talks to accommodate movement among the talks.

Q9.  What sort of overhead display equipment is available?

A.  Each of the rooms in which GPOTS events will take place has a full range of audio-visual equipment.  In particular, each has a blackboard, an over head project and an "elmo",  and each has computer equipment that enables one to project transparencies onto a screen.  All classrooms with data projectors & technology podiums are equipped with VGA laptop connections.  For a detailed list of the equipment, please visit the URLs below.  Lecture Room 1 of Van Allen hall will feature the main presentations, i.e., the hour-long talks and the half-hour featured presentations.  Lecture Rooms 1 and 2, Room 70 and Room 158 will be used for the contributed presentations.

We recommend that speakers planning to use electronic equipment should bring back-up alternatives.  Thus, for example, if you plan to connect your laptop to a technology podium and you run Linux, then you may want also to bring transparencies as a back up or bring your presentation also as a .pdf file on a memory stick.
