Iowa State University Summer Research Programs

2009 ISU REU project descriptions

Alliance students at Iowa State University will work on projects offered by the Department of Mathematics (6 students) and the Department of Statistics (6 students).  Alliance students will live together with students supported by other REU grants in Frederiksen Court (in 4-bedroom apartments where each student has a private bedroom).  Lunch or dinner will be provided each day at Union Drive Marketplace.

For questions about the ISU program, please contact Prof. Leslie Hogben, lhogben@iastate.edu

Mathematics

Alliance undergraduate researchers in mathematics will be part of the MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTING RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY.  Participants spend the entire eight weeks working on research projects as part of active research groups at ISU that consist of faculty graduate students and undergraduates.    The projects are in a variety of mathematical areas, representing the diverse research interests of the ISU Mathematics Department, such as  mathematical biology, linear algebra, dynamical systems, probability, and graph theory.  At the beginning of the summer the mentors explain the necessary background to the students, but there is no formal workshop or class component to this program.

Statistics

The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University offers a summer research experience in Applied Statistics under the Alliance Program. All students in this program will take a five week class in applied statistics and then work with a faculty member in Statistics on analyzing a data set using the techniques learned in the class. The Department of Statistics is a large and diverse department. Current faculty members are doing research in areas such as: engineering statistics, social science statistics, design of experiments, survey sampling, bioinformatics, environmental and ecological statistics, statistical computing, statistical graphics.
