Iowa State University Research Program
Alliance Students at Iowa State University will work on projects offered by the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Statistics. Students will be housed with students from the AGEP summer program.
Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University has hosted summer research programs for undergraduates for eight of the past ten summers and will offer undergraduate research projects through the Alliance program in summer 2008. Alliance students at ISU will be part of a larger summer research experience at ISU that involves undergraduate students in many fields and includes recreational and social activities. Mathematics undergraduate researchers will be part of research teams; each team consists of faculty member(s), graduate student(s) and undergraduate student(s). A sample of a previous summer REU page is here. Publications by ISU summer research students may be found here. The Department of Mathematics will offer two projects with mentors Leslie Hogben and Justin Peters.

Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University will host 2-3 Alliance summer students in their research project with mentor Carl K Chang. Find more information about the research project here.
Statistics
The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University offers a summer research experience in Applied Statistics under the Alliance Program. All students in this program will take a five week class in applied statistics and then work with a faculty member in Statistics on analyzing a data set using the techniques learned in the class. The Department of Statistics is a large and diverse department. Current faculty members are doing research in areas such as: engineering statistics, social science statistics, design of experiments, survey sampling, bioinformatics, environmental and ecological statistics, statistical computing, statistical graphics.
Faculty mentors offering projects are:
Mike Larsen: Survey Sampling
Derrick Rollins: Engineering Statistics
Mark Kaiser: Environmental and Ecological Statistics
Dan Nettleton: Bioinformatics
Mack Shelley: Social Science Statistics
