The Minority Student Recruitment and Development Program
The Minority Student Recruitment and Development Committee of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Iowa has taken a leadership role in helping fulfill the University's mission to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the sciences. Indeed, several other units in the University have sought our help in their efforts. Since the problem we seek to solve is global (rather than local), we have formed an alliance with the three State Regents Institutions of Iowa (Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa) and several HBCU's (Historical Black Colleges and Universities). Of course, our efforts have had and will have in the future a pronounced effect here at the University of Iowa. A quip uttered several years ago by one active member of the committee, Phil Kutzko, is slowly becoming a slogan which expresses the committee's goal of fulfilling the University's mission: "From Ruralism to Pluralism".
In the slides that follow, you will be introduced to the students, staff, faculty, and people of the community to whom we are grateful for helping us progress toward our goal. The pictures can be enlarged by positioning the cursor over the picture and clicking with the mouse.
