The Department of Mathematics of the University of Iowa offers an enrichment program for junior high school students.

We’ll meet twice per month starting Dec. 4 in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Iowa to discuss some advanced topics in mathematics not always covered by the school curriculum. The material will feature higher than normal level of difficulty to provide extra challenge to students. The particular topics will include problem solving strategies, number theory, divisibility tests, prime factorization, initiation to geometry, Pythagorean triples, counting, and probability.

Students will be given homework regularly to reinforce new concepts. The homework will be graded, and feedback will be given. There will be homework help session via Zoom.

We invite motivated and hard-working students who love mathematics and ready for extra challenge and fun!

This is an outreach program supported by the Mathematical Association of America and it is offered free of charge. Once all spots are filled, students will be placed on waitlist. Registration is for the entire program, not individual dates.

Math Platoon is a collaboration between Dr. Colleen Mitchell of the Department of Mathematics and IVETS. When Dr. Mitchell's husband, a Marine Corps veteran, heard about IVETS's call for math professors to start a tutoring program, he told her how much of a difference this program would have made when he returned to college for his degree in engineering. She decided to make the program a reality.

Dr. Mitchell and a team of graduate students began holding twice-weekly tutoring sessions for military-connected students in January 2020. The meetings moved to Zoom when the university switched to virtual instruction in March 2021, but are now fully in-person again.

Math Platoon meets twice a week in 304 Calvin Hall:

  • 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Mondays
  • 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays

Mission statement

The mission of Women in Mathematics (WIM) at the University of Iowa is to foster the success of women in math at all levels from undergraduate through faculty. WIM strives to encourage women mathematicians through mentoring relationships and monthly activities. These activities include invited speakers, lunches, and informal outings. We provide an opportunity for interaction with outstanding women mathematicians and a supportive community for women in the department.

Resources

Public engagement in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The University of Iowa’s core mission extends beyond the classrooms, laboratories, studios, and libraries where we educate students, conduct our research, and create new artistic work. Equally important is our engagement with communities throughout Iowa, across the nation, and around the world.

Our faculty, students, and staff work to solve problems, imagine new approaches to challenges, and improve quality of life, often through service-learning courses in which students earn academic credit.

It’s a virtuous circle: When UI expertise is harnessed to help a community or region improve the lives of its residents, the experience adds unique educational value to students’ academic journeys, and advances the research and creative production of our faculty. In turn, that new knowledge empowers us to help more communities, solve more problems, and improve more lives.

The UI is not just the University of Iowa, we're the University for Iowa—and throughout the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, we are proud to serve.
