Iowa City

The Arts

--- Iowa City may be a city of just 60,000, but the breadth of its entertainment offerings rivals that of a much larger city. The University of Iowa is home to Hancher Auditorium which has featured such national acts as Stomp, Grease, Cats, The Chieftains, The Canadian Brass, the Kronos Quartet and Itzhak Perlman.

---The University of Iowa has also recently hosted concerts by Ani DiFranco, Nine Inch Nails, They Might Be Giants and others. Iowa City is just a three hour drive from Chicago, a half hour from Cedar Rapids and two hours from Des Moines and Ames. Every summer, Iowa City hosts a two-day jazz festival. Downtown streets are blocked off and acts like the Neville Brothers perform.

---The University of Iowa also has very active Theatre, Music and Art programs. For a listing of activities at the University of Iowa check out the ArtsIowa homepage.

---The University of Iowa is also home to the world renowned Writer's Workshop. Alumni of the writer's workshop include John Irving, Flannery O'Connor, W.P. Kinsella, Jane Smiley, and Robert Bly. Iowa City is a literary hotbed in the Midwest, and a frequent stop for book tours.

Restaurants

--- The Math Department's MacLean Hall is a hop, skip and jump from a very wide variety of dining options in Downtown Iowa City. More than thirty different restaurants are within a short walk of the math building, and many more throughout the Iowa City/Coralville Area. A listing of IC/Coralville restaurants. If cooking for yourself is more your speed IC features several gourmet cooking stores, a biweekly farmer's market and The New Pioneer Co-op, an all natural organic grocery store.

Recreation

---While there is a lot of corn surrounding Iowa City, there are also a number of recreational opportunities in the area. The Coralville Lake is a large man-made lake that has many miles of nature/cross country skiing trails, swimming areas, sailing, camping, and disc golf courses. It is also the home of the Sugar Bottom off-road bicycle trail, which boasts 10.5 miles of mountain biking. In Iowa City itself, there are a large number of parks and recreation centers both through the city and the University. The Math Department has a softball team which plays about thirty games throughout the spring, summer and early fall, (picture) also flag  football  (Picture) (Picture) (Picture) (Picture) and volleyball (Picture).

Other activities are the annual Math Department Picnic (Picture)(Picture)(Picture), or  getting together for holiday parties (Picture)  (Picture) or some weekend relaxing with friends. (Picture)  (PICTURE)

Housing

---Housing in Iowa City comes in all shapes and sizes. Near campus a one bedroom apartment will cost between $380 and $450 per month. As you move away from campus the prices tend to drop, and naturally efficiencies are cheaper. Two bedroom apartments are generally in the $475-$650 per month range. The Iowa City/Coralville area is serviced by three separate bus agencies, so apartments are rarely more than a block or two from a bus stop. Directory of Housing resources in Iowa City.

---The University also has housing available to graduate students, generally at a cheaper rate. University Housing. (Note: This page is geared largely to undergrads, but the Family Housing and University apartments are generally for graduate students.)
