University of Iowa Math Club

Meeting on 17 April 2008

Minutes by Boanne MacGregor, Secretary

Welcome to another exciting edition of the University of Iowa undergrad Math Club. Our spiffy mathematical happenings were as follows:

Congratulations to the MCM-ers! The results are in, and Iowa has come out victorious. In our first year participating, all five of our teams were recognized; we had four honorable mentions and one meritorious paper. This astonishing feat is certainly deserving of at least five exclamation marks; here they are: !!!!! Ben wants to throw a celebratory party, so stay tuned for details and free food. Ben is also full of plans for next year and perhaps hosting a mock contest in the fall, so go ahead and think about teams for 2009.

As the semester draws to a close, we are scheming to put on a fun pre-finals club activity. Suggestions include: Fire It Up Pottery, Flatland movie night, bowling, and mini golf. More suggestions are welcome; email Danielle. The tentative date is Friday May 2nd.

Miller, in his capacity as brilliant club treasurer, got some club financial items approved by Student Government. UISG has generously allotted us reimbursement for math competition travel expenses plus $1 for a new secretarial notebook.

Danielle dazzled us with a stunning dead mathematician presentation on Weierstrass.

Boanne, in her secretarial diligence, will now put down her notebook to partake of the delicious free food. Many, many thanks to Carol in the advising department for once again providing us with cake and cookies.

Anyone who has taken photos of club life, please pass them along to Colin for inclusion in his thank you album for Carol the baking angel.
