University of Iowa Math Club

Minutes by Boanne MacGregor, Secretary

Welcome to the next exciting installment of the UI math club minutes.

Meeting called to order 6:15 PM.

Ben stopped by to say hi and congratulate our brave math modelers. The contest was last weekend, and all five teams submitted papers. Ben and the crew are already full of plans for next year's contest.

Love math and need something to do over the summer? Prof. Simon encouraged students to apply for a summer REU here at the Iowa math department. There are 6 seats reserved for UI students. For information, go to http://www.math.uiowa.edu/VIGRE/index.html

Miller, our brilliant treasurer, reminded us of the upcoming high school math competition on Saturday March 1. Volunteers who would like a free lunch from Muhly are needed to proctor from around 8:30 - 1:00. Anyone interested email Miller.

If anyone has any club-related photos, please send a copy to Colin, who will compile them into a thank you album for our baking angel Carol in the advising department.

Speaking of Carol, let it be noted that a batch of her delicious cookies and cakes were among those present. (Let it be tactfully not noted how many of those were consumed by Boanne. And let anyone be slapped who mocks Boanne's eating habits. Not that I'm mentioning any names, Luke.)

The Intercollegiate Math Competition is coming up on March 8. Drake is hosting it, so anyone interested should prepare for a nerdy road trip. Reminder to our illustrious president: send out an email regarding the competition and whatever else it was that you said to remind you about.

Jeremiah spoke as our live mathematician. He very impressively accessibleified his advisor's research of redefining factorization.

Luke, our honorable and strikingly pulchritudinous webmaster, gave our dead mathematician talk. He presented his findings on the life and math of Euler, pronounced Yoo-ler for purposes of Colin-annoyance. (If you're ever looking for an amusing diversion, try talking about Yoo-ler and Oi-clid within a 100 meter radius of Colin. It's quite entertaining. Sorry, Colin.)

That's all for tonight, folks. Tune back in on March 6 for our next episode: same time, same place, and same high levels of nerdiness.
