Society of Undergraduate Math Students

University of Iowa

Meeting: February 7, 2008

Minutes by Boanne MacGregor, Secretary

Welcome to Math Club! This meeting unofficially called to order around 6:15.

Colin, being his kind and considerate self, suggested that we as a club show our appreciation for our baking angel Carol in the advising department, who once again provided us with delicious goodies in the form of cakes and brownies. So, we came up with a plan: we’ll take pictures of everything that we do for the rest of the semester and then Colin will compile them into a thank-you album.

Colin also suggested that we as a club should have some fun. One would think that just sitting around discussing math every other week would be fun enough for anyone, but apparently he had something more exciting in mind. For instance, we speculated on a trip to the bowling alley during the winter and an afternoon of frolicking in a field of flowers after the weather warms up. Other suggestions include kickball or Halo tournaments.

Heather the knot theorist came to speak on mind-bending topology. It was seriously awesome, in spite or maybe because of the fact that it made our brains hurt.

Due to this week’s low attendance, Luke postponed his dead mathematician talk. He will present his feelings on Euler (pronounced U-ler for purposes of Colin-annoyance) next time.

Speaking of next time, someone remind us to talk about scheduling and arrange an opportunity for everyone to go bowling or flower frolicking or something.
