Undergraduate Research Assistantships

The Department of Mathematics will have some available positions for Undergraduate Research Assistants during the Spring 2013 semester. Undergrad RAs work with faculty members for mathematical research, curriculum development, data gathering, interdisciplinary work (connections of Mathematics to other subjects), computer-based mathematical experimentations, development of web-based instructional materials, or other projects. An Undergrad RA project is an ideal way to get to know faculty, explore your own interests, build your resume for work or grad school, give faculty a solid basis for writing letter of recommendation for you, and get an idea for an honors thesis project.
All URAs commit 10 hours per week for research activities and are encouraged to participate in such events as the annual Spring Undergraduate Research Forum, usually in April.
The stipend per semester is between $1,350 for Spring 2013.

All URAs are:

1) expected to attend Undergraduate Colloquia;

2) expected to present research results at appropriate meetings; funds are available to support travel for these kind of activities.

Funding for the regular URAs comes from the University of Iowa. If you and a specific faculty member already have a project to propose, please include the specifics on the form. If you are interested but not yet partnered with a specific faculty member, we can help to identify potential faculty mentors. The regular URAs are not limited to US citizens or permanent residents.

Qualifications for an Undergraduate RA are: 1) to be a Math major; 2) to have performed reasonably well in Math and related courses with a GPA of at least 3.00 with at least 30 s.h. completed. It has been getting competitive as interest in the program has grown, but there is no need to be intimidated by the selection process or the job.

How to apply: If you are interested in an Undergraduate Research Assistantship, please pick up the (very short!) application form from Chris Brenneman in 14 MLH and return it to her. Or you can print the form here and then return it to Chris. We will start processing the applications after February 4, 2013. Please send your application and supporting documents as soon as possible, but no later than February 6, 2013 if you want to be considered for an award starting in February 2013 (hence be paid for the whole spring semester). .

For more information about Undergraduate RAs contact Prof. Oguz Durumeric.

Tutoring

There are also opportunities for paid work in tutoring. We are sometimes asked by other departments and high school students' parents to recommend tutors or other kinds of assistants. If you would like to do work like this, you can get on our tutor list by filling out the form available here or from Chris in the math office (14 MLH).
