What I'm doing with my life

I'm currently a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Iowa. My research is focused on ancient Greek mathematics; for details, see my Research Overview or Research pages.

I've been at Iowa for a little over 5 years now. Before that, I was at the University of Texas at Dallas, where I earned my B.S. in Mathematics. Before that I spent a year at St. John's College (Santa Fe) studying Greek, classical philosophy and history, and a few other things. I graduated high school from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Sciences, where I simultaneously earned 2 years of college credit and my high school diploma.

Just for Fun

Outside of education and academia, I really enjoy playing with computers. Computing has always been a hobby, going all the way back to age 3 when my dad had me using a Commodore 64 (I couldn't even read!). Both of my computers are Macs: I have a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro named Hypatia and an iMac named Archimedes. Previous systems are now in the care of my family: Ptolemy (a MacBook Pro) is in the custody of my parents; Euclid, my first Mac (a PowerBook G4 12") is now in the custody of my maternal grandparents. And yes, they're all named after Greek mathematicians. The SSID on my wireless network are even "aether-n" and "aether-g" to round out the theme!

I also really like cooking and having friends over for dinner. I'm pretty good at making Mediterranean, Italian, and Tex-Mex style foods. I've also done many other dishes, from chili to fish and beyond!

Behind me is my dearest friend Heather Russell, who is skillfully chopping veggies. Also behind me is a skillet full of fajita marinated chicken, simmering to perfection!

Photos

I store a great number of photos on my MobileMe Photo Gallery. Plus, now that I have a camera, I expect more things to find their way there and here!
