Explicit, Implicit, Parametric

There are three main geometrical ways to represent formulas, explicit graphs, implicit graphs, and parametric graphs.  You studied these all in high school and beginning calculus, but now this classification will play a helpful organizing role.  Mathematica can plot all three ways.  Following are explicit, implicit, and parametric plots of a unit circle in 2D and a sphere in 3D.
