MOTION
FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION FACULTY
Almost every
respectable teacher training institution in the country requires one or two
mathematics courses specifically intended for and designed for elementary
education majors. Sadly, the University
of Iowa does not. (If you taught math
methods, you would realize just how very sad this is.)
Our Mathematics
Department does offer a course intended for elementary education majors, but it
is required only for math area of specialization students. (That course is 22M:004.)
Our Math
Department has designed a package of courses to replace present 22M:004:
¨ 22M:006 (new course) assumes less
mathematical background of students than does present 22M:004. It is intended for students who choose an
area other than math as area of specialization.
¨ 22M:012 (new course) is somewhat more
challenging than present 22M:004. It
is meant for students who choose math as area of specialization. This is the course that would be required
for the math area of specialization. No
student could receive credit toward graduation for both 22M:006 and 012.
¨ 7E:163, Elementary Math Methods, would
have as prerequisite successful completion of either 22M:006 or 012.
¨ Both 22M:006 and 012 would be taught by
Math Department faculty who had expertise in mathematics education and who
worked closely with our elementary mathematics education professor(s) to
maximize the effectiveness of the two courses taken together. (This assurance from the Math Department
will avoid repeating a number of past woes.)
¨ Both 006 and 012 would be listed as
satisfying the College of Liberal Arts QFR (Quantitative or Formal Reasoning)
general education requirement for graduation.
This would insure that requiring 006 or 012 of our students would result
in no additional semester hours being required of them for graduating.
THE MOTION
Provided realization of all of the above, we, the elementary education faculty
agree to the above, applicable to (required of) students who enter the program
upon 22M:006 first being offered by the Mathematics Department.
This
motion was passed unanimously by the C&I Elementary Education faculty on
Friday, March 28, 2003.
