The Eighth Annual High School Mathematics Tournament at the University of Iowa was held on Saturday, March 6, 2004 from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year’s competition was a great success. The tournament received generous support from a variety of units and individuals; without this support, the event would not have been possible. We therefore want to begin by thanking those who contributed to its success: The College of Engineering; the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics and Actuarial Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the office of the Provost. We particularly want to thank Dean Gary Fethke and Professor Carol Fethke, and Mrs. Catharine Wegner, a 1934 Mathematics Alumna and long-time teacher of Mathematics, who helped endow the tournament.

This year’s competition brought together roughly 180 students from the following schools:

Central High School

City High School, Iowa City

Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School

Davenport Central High School

Davenport West High School

Home Schools of Cedar Rapids and Marion

Iowa Mennonite High School

Jefferson High School

Keokuk High School

Linn-Mar Community School

Marshalltown High School

Regina High School, Iowa City

Valley High School

Valley Southwoods High School

Washington High School Cedar Rapids

Washington High School Vinton

Vinton-Shellsburg High School

Waverly-Shell Rock Senior High School

West High School, Iowa City

West Liberty High School

The students participated in a total of four "events". In two of these events (the "Sprint Round" and the "Target Round"), students answered mathematics test questions on individual tests. In the remaining two events (the "Team Round" and the "Relay Round") students worked in teams. Professors Oguz Durumeric, Paul Muhly, George Nelson, Walter Seaman, and University of Iowa student volunteers proctored the events. The volunteers were enormously helpful in making the competition run smoothly. While the students were writing their exams, a team of mathematics teachers from the participating schools graded the completed exams. Matt Johnson, an undergraduate in Computer Science, and Katie Voss, a secretary in Mathematics, entered the results into an Access database, and Ricardo Ortiz, graduate student in Mathematics, worked as the computer support person.

At the awards ceremony, Professor Patricia Cain recent Interim Provost at the University of Iowa, congratulated the participants and gave a talk in which she told students about the importance of Mathematics to their futures and how impressed she was at the skill levels employed in solving problems. Below is a summary of the results of the tournament.
